Abstract: The Office of AIDS Research (OAR) at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the US Public Health Service (PHS) assembled committees to recommend a new standard of treatment for HIV infection. Treatment guides designed in response to the recommendations are provided. The guides include recommendations for viral load and T-cell count testing; the signs, symptoms, and treatment of primary infection; treatments for established HIV infection; risk of progression by T-cell and viral load categories; benefits and risks of early treatment; treatments to use when beginning therapy; treatments for previously treated patients, regimens for patients who have failed treatment; and treatments for pregnant women.
