Abstract: While complete viral suppression of HIV and the use of new combination therapies are quickly becoming the standard for HIV treatment, many questions about this new knowledge are being raised. The Fourth National Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in 1997 began addressing many of these questions. A summary is presented that addresses the most important issues discussed at the conference in the areas of the biology of HIV infection, treatment strategies and the emergence of resistant virus, what has been learned from studies of various treatment regimens and what new anti-HIV drugs are becoming available.
