Abstract: ACTG 076 findings demonstrated that a regimen of zidovudine (ZDV) reduced perinatal HIV transmission by two-thirds in infants whose mothers met specific eligibility criteria, including no previous antiretroviral treatment. The study is being hailed as one of the most significant breakthroughs in prevention of HIV, although it did not provide information on the long-term effects of ZDV or any potential adverse effects on the infants involved.
