Abstract: Medicaid is a lifeline to HIV care for roughly half of the adults living with AIDS and ninety percent of the children living with AIDS, but it harbors challenges for those who seek to use it. Applying for Medicaid, preparing for the application process, reducing bureaucratic delays, accessing quality care within the current Medicaid system, and obtaining prescription drugs and viral load tests are discussed. The problems associated with Medicaid and managed care systems and the hurdles they present for recipients attempting to gain access to both adequate care and prescription drug services are examined. Medicaid must not only be maintained at its current funding level but also enhanced to better serve people with chronic and life-threatening illnesses. Individuals who are interested in information for monitoring Medicaid and letting the President and Congress know of its importance should contact Project Inform.
