Abstract: The first government-sanctioned HIV treatment guidelines are being finalized by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of AIDS Research and the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). The guidelines will replace those developed by the Public Health Service in 1993, before any of the protease inhibitors were approved. Preliminary data tables that indicate that triple-combination therapy is strongly recommended as initial therapy are included.
