Abstract: Viral load test manufacturers have started two programs to make the tests available to those who cannot pay for them. To qualify, patients must be HIV-positive, have a doctor order the test, and not be able to have the costs covered through their insurance. Both PCR (polymerase chain reaction, by Hoffmann-La Roche) and branched DNA (by Chiron) are largely equivalent, but patients should get the same kind of test each time so that the results are consistent.
