Abstract: To coincide with the tenth anniversary of ACT UP, the effectiveness of the AIDS treatment movement is assessed. Activists have been instrumental in sensitizing the medical community to the needs of patients, pressuring drug companies to develop programs to make treatments financially accessible, and establishing standards of care. Upcoming issues that will be addressed include financial issues, access to care, design of clinical trials, examination of alternative therapies, and educational issues.
