Abstract: Awilda Gonzalez discusses her experiences working with incarcerated people living with AIDS. Awilda has worked as a counselor for Housing Works, an organization that provides housing and other services for people with AIDS. Awilda also worked at the Bedford Hills correctional facility. As an inmate, she helped to start the counseling and education program to assist Latin-American prisoners living with AIDS. Before she went to prison, she did not know anything about AIDS. While serving her sentence, she located materials about AIDS, created a Spanish curriculum about AIDS, gave lectures, and worked as a counselor. In 1994, she received a pardon from Governor Mario Cuomo for her community service. Awilda continues to help inmates.
