Abstract: A hospital's legal responsibilities with regard to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) are constantly being redefined. A crucial risk management strategy is the careful crafting and updating of policies that comply with relevant laws, guidelines, and regulations and that take into account the current medical and scientific knowledge of the disease and its transmission. This Self-Assessment Questionnaire (SAQ) covers a range of issues related to HIV/AIDS policies and procedures. The first part of this questionnaire will help risk managers assess their AIDS policies and procedures for compliance with relevant guidelines, laws, and regulations. The second part of the SAQ addresses the content of specific policies. The SAQ should be completed annually by the risk manager in collaboration with the hospital attorney and, as appropriate, with the directors of infection control, employee health services, and human resources.
