Abstract: A Federal appeals court has upheld the firing of a nurse who, because of her pregnancy, refused to care for an HIV patient. Pamela Armstrong, a nurse in the Home Care Services Division of Flowers Hospital in Dothan, AL, argued that exposure to an HIV-positive patient might harm her fetus even if she employed universal precaution protocols. The court rebuffed Armstrong's contention that her diagnosis of gestational diabetes put her at a higher risk for contracting illnesses from an HIV-positive patient.
