Abstract:
We investigated the relationships between acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, chronic myeloid leukemia and refractory anemia with excess of blasts and antibodies to human T lymphotropic (HTLV) virus type I and II and hepatitis B and C viruses in a multicenter case control study on risk factors for acute leukemias. 431 cases and 862 controls aged 15 years or older were recruited in three hospitals. All cases and controls were negative for HTLV-I antibodies; whereas one case and one control were found positive for HTLV-II antibodies. A significant association was found between Hbsag and pre-acute leukemias (chronic myeloid leukemia and anemia with excess of blasts) (odds ratio [OR], 2.9; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.0-8.5). A slight but not significant association was present between acute myeloid leukemia, acute lymphocytic leukemia, anemia with excess of blasts and anti-HCV.
