Abstract:
Incidence rates for non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) were calculated using all incident cases diagnosed in Jamaica during 1984-1987, and all incident cases of African descent in Trinidad during 1986-1990. HTLV-I status was ascertained by serologic methods and rates are based on 1980 population census reports for both countries (combined pop 4 million). Rates were computed for all lymphomas and HTLV-I exposed and unexposed lymphomas, according to age and sex. Differences in absolute risk for NHL between HTLV-I exposed and unexposed groups were examined. The annualized NHL incidence rate in Jamaica and Trinidad/Tobago was 3.6/100,000 PY. Overall, the incidence of NHL increased with age, being highest in those over 60 years old, and age-specific rates were higher in males than in females at all ages. Among HTLV unexposed persons this pattern persisted, with no significant difference between age specific rates for both sexes; and rates were comparable with those from other developing countries. In the HTLV-I exposed group, NHL rates were significantly higher than among HTLV unexposed in all age categories except the oldest (60+ years) and declined with age. Approximately half of all NHL in these locales, particularly among those less than 60 years old, is explained by HTLV-I infection.
