Abstract: The results of recent trials testing the combination of AZT and 3TC were reported at the AIDS Conferences in Glasgow, Scotland in November, and Washington, DC in February. Two sets of nearly parallel studies were conducted in Europe and the U.S.; each had one study of AZT-naive persons and one of AZT-experienced persons. The trials monitored changes in blood markers (CD4 counts and viral load) but not clinical progression. The combination of AZT and 3TC had a greater effect than either drug alone or any other combination previously tested, but, it is not known if these effects will result in improved clinical outcomes. Clinical trials are beginning now to determine if AZT and 3TC can delay symptoms and death.
