Abstract: This book is comprised of five sections covering some of the major areas of clinical oncologic research and the major issues involved. The first section on breast cancer brings together contributions on breast cancer in young women and controversies in primary radiation therapy (Barbara Fowble), issues in systemic therapy (Craig Henderson), the role of bone marrow transplantation (William Peters), and imaging and stereotactic biopsy (Edward Sickles). Ovarian cancer includes screening (Robert Young), an HPV update (Ralph Richart), a critique of debulking (Paul Morrow), and salvage treatment (Maurie Markman); Ronald Ross contributes a chapter on hormonal replacement therapy for early endometrial and breast cancer. In keeping with recent concerns, Joseph Connors delivers the Bernard L. Schwartz Lecture on cancer care in the Canadian system. The section on lung cancer includes current surgery of Stage IIIA NSC (Robert Ginsberg) and its radiation treatment (William Sause) radiation, treatment or non-treatment for Stage IV NSC (Phillip Bonomi), and a 20-year overview of the treatment of small cell lung cancer (Lawrence Einhorn). A section on new concepts comprises papers on basic principles for oncologists (Eric Fearon), clinical applications of genetics (Henry Lynch), bladder cancer (Derek Raghavan), and an HIV update (Harry Hollander). The final section on hematology includes the myelodysplastic states (Grover Bagby), progress in aplastic anemia (Donald Feinstein), advances in paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria and the hemolytic states (Wendell Rosse), platelet allo-immunizations and heparin: good news and bad news (John Kelton), and primary treatment of myeloma (Joseph Connors). The text of most of the contributions appears to consist simply of the texts and slides as delivered.
