Abstract: Gordon Nary, executive director of the Physicians Association for AIDS Care (PAAC), joined representatives from the American Dietetic Association, the Academy of Family Physicians, the Nutrition Screening Initiative, and the National Alliance for Infusion Therapy to meet with Senator Thomas Harkin (D-Iowa) about the importance of nutrition reimbursement in healthcare reform. Harkin took the lead in the 103rd Congress in offering an amendment to healthcare reform proposals to permit insurance reimbursement for medical nutritional therapies. Nary stated that malnutrition is a profound complication of late-stage HIV disease and that many patients die of starvation. He also noted that malnutrition may compromise survival by its interaction with opportunistic infections. Senator Harkin agreed to encourage the Federal Employee Health Plan, which insures 10 million Federal employees, to reimburse for medical nutritional therapies.
