Abstract: Foscarnet (Foscavir), an antiviral used to treat CMV (cytomegalovirus) infection, is also used to treat acyclovir-resistant herpes simplex and all other herpesviruses. Foscarnet, an expensive treatment, has serious side effects, especially kidney toxicity. A laboratory study found evidence that Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) may be caused by a herpesvirus. When physicians noticed that KS regressed in two patients being treated with foscarnet for other purposes, a pilot study of five patients was conducted. Three of the five patients had a long-term remission of KS after a single 10-day treatment. The study, organized by Linda Morfeldt of the Karolinska Institute in Sweden, suggests that the effect of foscarnet on KS is not proven, that the drug may be effective in early KS, and that patients with ongoing active infections may not respond to foscarnet as a KS treatment. Other small studies are being organized. The experiences of persons with KS who have used foscarnet are covered.
