Abstract:
This volume represents a 10-year update to one published in 1982 in the same series. HTLV-I is now recognized as a causative agent of adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) and also of a neurologic disease, HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). Japanese workers have been particularly active in this area, in part because of HTLV-I endemicity in Japan, but also because of effective collaboration that is well illustrated in the chapters by 20 Japanese groups included in this volume. The book is organized into two parts: HTLV-I-associated diseases and virology of HTLV-I. The first part briefly mentions the incidence of ATL, HAM/TSP and other diseases associated with the virus in Japan, the clinical features, pathology, and cytology of these diseases, treatment of ATL, immunogenic features associated with pathogenesis of HAM/TSP, chromosome aberrations in ATL, and altered interleukin-2 receptors in ATL. The second part deals more extensively with epidemiology of HTLV-I in Japan and the world, and discusses the diagnosis of infections, the factors involved in HTLV-I transmission, including maternal and sexual transmission, and a rabbit model system for studying the virus. Also included in this section are discussions of positive and negative regulation of HTLV-I gene expression, HTLV-II, and the simian virus, STLV-I. Individual chapters are illustrated and well referenced, and there are very brief author and subject indices.
