Abstract: Previously we reported that lignins display potent stimulatory effects on the iodination reaction in myeloperoxidase (MPO)-positive cells. We investigated the antihuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) activity of lignins in MPO-positive (HL-60) and negative (U-937) human myelogenous leukemic cell lines. Natural lignified compounds and their dehydrogenated polymers effectively inhibit the cytopathic effect of HIV-1 infection in HL-60, U-937 cells, MT-4 and MOLT-4 cells. HIV infection results in a strong reduction of MPO activity in HL-60 cells, regardless of the presence or absence of lignins. From the experiments described, we conclude that the lignin-mediated anti-HIV activity is not correlated with the intracellular MPO activity, but has to be attributed to other mechanisms. One possibility might be a direct inactivation of HIV by lignins. Moreover, it appears to be plausible that the lignins display their anti-HIV activity by inhibiting the expression of virus genome, integrated into host DNA.
