Abstract: Trial ACTG 204, involving the anti-herpes drug valacyclovir, has been halted by a safety monitoring board after initial data showed that participants have poorer survival rates compared to patients receiving standard medications. Valacycolvir produced more renal toxicity and neutropenia in patients. However, the Johns Hopkins study data do suggest that the drug helped reduce the incidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease. Volunteers in the study are being asked to return to study sites for a final eye exam so that researchers may learn more about the drug's possible effects on CMV.
