Abstract: The House Ways and Means Committee has approved a provision to amend current tax laws that would allow those who receive life insurance benefits before their death to do so free from any tax liability. Presently, the bill does not allow retroactive tax benefits to those who received accelerated death benefits or those who have sold policies to viatical settlement providers. The new proposal would only apply to payments received after December 31, 1995.
