Abstract: Genentech has agreed to supply nerve growth factor (NGF), a potential treatment for HIV-associated peripheral neuropathy, for an AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) study, ACTG 291. The NGF study is important since there are no therapies for peripheral neuropathy which target the underlying cause of neuropathy, nerve damage. All currently available options treat the symptoms of pain associated with peripheral neuropathy, not the cause, and neuropathy in HIV can have many different causes. NGF may help repair nerve damage caused by HIV-infection, especially small nerve damage.
