Abstract: A Federal judge ruled that Philadelphia's Mercy Hospital has the right to force surgeon Paul Scoles, MD, to inform his patients of his HIV-positive status in order to continue his operating privileges there. Dr. Scoles had sued the hospital, claiming that he had been discriminated against and that his practice was ruined. Some experts and Dr. Scoles himself fear that this case will have a negative effect on voluntary disclosure of HIV status.
