Abstract: The results of a look-back investigation by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) concludes that 24 HIV-positive dental patients were not infected by their HIV-positive dentist. The retrospective investigation of a Florida dentist showed that all 24 patients had viral strains too different to be linked. Of the pool of tested patients, a total of 28 were infected and all but 4 had behavioral risk factors. The dentist treated mostly indigent patients in an inner-city section of Miami and was known to make breaches in infection control. Data from the results of 20,000 people tested indicate that the risk of transmission in dental offices is rare, although this study was not able to resolve the case of dentist David Acer, who, according to the CDC, infected seven of his patients.
