Abstract: In a 5-year study of 136 couples, caregivers reported that 66 of the partners who had died received an increase in medication prior to death, and in 17 of these instances the increase was given intentionally to hasten death. In 80 percent of the cases where assisted suicide was discussed with the physician, the ill partner or caregiver, not the physician, initiated the discussion. The study's authors conclude that caregivers should be included in discussions about assisted suicide.
