Abstract: Compassion in Dying, a Seattle-based organization, offers counseling and assistance for individuals wishing to end their lives. For assistance, applicants must submit three sequential appeals in writing and a confirmed diagnosis of terminal illness by two physicians. They must have given due consideration to hospice care and have unmanageable physical pain. The decision to end one's life must be in accordance with loved ones and/or family, and there must be no sign of depression. Jerome Motto, a former officer of two associations dealing with suicide, feels that a person considering suicide must be rational and have considered all of the alternatives; have considered the impact on family; and hold suicide to be compatible with his or her religion or philosophy of life.
