Abstract: The conference, Dimensions of Caring 1992: Enhancing the Quality of Life in Palliative Care, held March 12-13, 1992, in San Diego, California, was presented by the Green Cancer Center of Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation and the San Diego Hospice. There were daily opening and closing plenary presentations, but the bulk of the time was devoted to five sessions of workshops on 18 widely varied topics, such as helping patients deal with questionable methods of cancer care, restoring quality of life in advanced illness, grief and bereavement in children, prevention and treatment of cancer and AIDS cachexia, principles of oncology for the healthcare professional with a nonmedical background, approaches to the management of neuropathic pain in palliative care, sexual problems of the seriously ill, the emotional aspects of cancer: psychiatric syndromes and their management, identification and treatment of insomnia in the palliative care setting, and palliative pain management: choosing systems and drugs.
