Abstract: The plethora of disease syndromes (dystrophy of various organ systems, malignancies and opportunistic infections) caused by HIV are all potentiated by the profound virus-induced immunosuppression that accompanies this infection. The mechanism of this severe immunosuppression is poorly understood and the subject is currently being pursued in studies of HIV-infected patients and in animals infected with other immunodeficiency-inducing retroviruses.
