Abstract: Epidemic Kaposi's sarcoma is the most common cancer associated with HIV infection. Since its recognition in 1981, several treatment regimens have evolved, but there is no consensus approach to treatment. These approaches to treatment have produced differing results and varying expectations. This pilot study found that combining bid topical 5-fluorouracil treatment with 24 Gy external beam radiotherapy (RT) produced a significantly greater CR rate (p=0.016) and a significantly shorter time to CR (p=0.016) than lesions treated concurrently with RT alone. The concomitant treatment produced 100% CR at 1 month vs 0% for the RT alone group (n=6). There were no treatment failures in the concomitant treatment group at 6 months vs 60% failure in the RT alone group (n=5). These results are compared to the reported results in the literature.
