Abstract:
In the time since publication of this text's predecessor (Clinical Oncology: A Multidisciplinary Approach), the body of knowledge relative to cancer has grown so dramatically that this new, more comprehensive text for medical students and physicians involved in oncology was created to address not only the pathology, etiology, nature and treatment of cancer, but also the related issues that are key to a multidisciplinary approach to cancer care. Not all cancers can be prevented with the present state of knowledge; however, some can. Most cancers of the lung are caused by cigarette smoking and most skin cancers, by excessive exposure to direct sunlight; cancers caused by occupational and/or environmental factors can be prevented by eliminating or reducing contact with carcinogenic agents. To assist physicians in their communications with other physicians and with their cancer patients (pts), this text presents 45 chapters covering the following topics: cancer statistics and trends; pathologic evaluation of neoplastic diseases; principles of surgical, of radiation, and of medical oncology; principles of tumor immunology; causes of cancer; cancer prevention; smoking and diet in cancer; properties of viruses associated with human cancer; cancer detection; cancers of the organs and systems (breast; lung; colorectal; pancreas, gallbladder, and extrahepatic ducts; liver; gastric neoplasms; malignant melanoma; urologic and male genital; skin [basal cell and squamous cell carcinoma]; head, neck, and thyroid; central nervous system and pituitary; eye and ocular adnexa; bone; soft tissue sarcomas; Hodgkin's disease and non-Hodgkin's lymphomas; multiple myeloma; adult and childhood leukemias; pediatric solid tumors; and gynecologic); nutrition and the cancer pt; oncologic emergencies; AIDS-related cancer; supportive care and rehabilitation of the cancer pt; diagnosis and treatment of cancer pain; psychiatric complications in cancer pts; principles of oncology nursing and of oncology social work; sexuality and cancer; dental oncology; oncologic imaging; and principles of cancer biology.
