Abstract:
Because mycoplasmas may be a cofactor in the progression of HIV infection to AIDS, their susceptibilities to antibiotics need to be understood for appropriate therapy. The mycoplasmas studied were: Mycoplasma penetrans; Mycoplasma fermentans, var. incognitus; two strains of Mycoplasma fermentans isolated from AIDS patients; Mycoplasma fermentans; and Mycoplasma pirum (both obtained from NIH). The antibiotics tested were: Clarithromycin, Azithromycin, Erythromycin, Ofloxacin, Clindamycin, Doxycycline and Tetracycline. Minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) against Clarithromycin was also done. Using the metabolic inhibition method, all six mycoplasma strains were susceptible to Clarithromycin, Azithromycin, Ofloxacin, Clindamycin, Doxycycline and Tetracycline. M. penetrans was susceptible to Erythromycin. The M. fermentans strains and M. pirum were resistant to Erythromycin. All five mycoplasma isolates tested showed low MIC levels to Clarithromycin. The range was from < 0.125 mcg/ml--1.0 mcg/ml with a median final MIC of 0.5 mcg/ml. These tests indicate that Clarithromycin is effective and has the potential to be added to the commonly used antibiotics in the treatment of AIDS-related mycoplasmas.
