Abstract: In this study, we have investigated by Western blot analysis the isotypic profile of the antibody response to HIV structural proteins (env, gag, and pol) for IgG subclasses. The study involves 100 HIV-1 positive Puerto Rican patients at various stages of infection that visited the Centro Latinoamericano de Enfermedades de Transmision Sexual (CLETS). Epidemiological and clinical data was collected from records kept by CLETS using the ID number of the patients. The patients were classified into the following groups. Intravenous drug users (40 patients), homosexuals (21 patients), heterosexuals (35 patients), and IVDU1 (homosexuals (4 patients). The detection of isotypes by Western blot permits an evaluation of the host response to specific viral proteins and the influence of the route of infection in the humoral response. The relevance of the finding in our population and its correlation with studies from other countries will be discussed.
