Abstract: A study was performed among a national sample of 1/7 of the 4193 microbiological French laboratories. They were asked how many gonococcal infections they have diagnosed during the year 1991. The response rate among the 599 which were sampled was 88%. A mean of 1.82 [1.51-2.13] male gonococcal isolates was declared. For France, the incidence of microbiological ascertained gonorrhoea in 1991 is thus 7,631 [6,331-8,931]. This estimate concerns microbiologically diagnosed infections. The true incidence of gonococcal infections is thus higher, as all the infections are not microbiologically ascertained in private practice. The proportion of male gonorrhoea cases that are treated without microbiological confirmation was estimated to be 70% in two French studies (J Epid Comm Health. 1991; 45:152-58). If we use this figure, we can consider that 10879 male gonorrhea cases occurred in France outside STD clinics. In France there are about 300 STD clinics that diagnosed 1933 male infections in 1990. We can add the 1933 male infections diagnosed in these clinics to the 10,901 estimated, giving a total number of 12,834 male gonorrhoea cases, i.e. an incidence rate of 74/100,000 inhabitants (15-59 years). This rate is very similar to the one observed in England and Wales.
