Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To monitor condom use in the Dutch general population, non monogamous respondents and respondents between 15-20 year. METHODS: Since 1987, twice a year, approximately 1000 respondents 15-45 year) are interviewed by telephone. To assess developments, data were analyzed with trend analysis. RESULTS: After 5 year of campaigning for safe sex and condom use, behaviour change did occur. Condom use (inconsequent and always) in the preceding half year increased from 20% in 1987 to 34% in November 1992. Within the subgroup respondents from 15-20 year, condom use raised from 11% to 69%. The non monogamous group showed an increase from 30% to 81%. In 1987 23% of the total group thought that they would use condoms in the future. In 1992 40% thinks so. For the younger respondents this figure increased from 43% to 79%, for the non monogamous respondents from 65% to 88%. DISCUSSION: At the same time as condom use increased, condom sales increased as well. It's promising that the changes take place in the groups where the changes are most needed. But still unprotected intercourse occurs.
