Abstract:
This volume is the syllabus of a postgraduate course presented October 10-12, 1991, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York. It includes full-length papers, workshop papers, and abstracts of poster presentations. The full-length papers include cancer in the socioeconomically disadvantaged (the role of interventions), public health approaches to smoking prevention and control (the role of health professionals), nutrition (fact or fancy), inherited susceptibility to cancer, psychosocial variables in cancer risk and survival, psychosocial issues in surgical oncology, classical conditioning processes in cancer chemotherapy, life after cancer treatment, psychopharmacologic interventions to reduce distress, psychotherapy and prolonged survival, structured psychiatric intervention for cancer patients (pts; impact on distress and immune function), quality of life in cancer, quality-of-life assessment (methodological issues), rehabilitation to achieve optimal function (lymphedema management model), current status of supportive care research in oncology, common ethical dilemmas confronting the caregiver in cancer, assessing suicidal risk in cancer pts, euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide, neuropsychological effects of CNS prophylactic treatment in childhood cancer (methodological considerations), psychological issues in AIDS prevention and care, alternative therapies, psychoneuroimmunology and psycho-oncology. Workshop presentations included management of pain in cancer (principles of opioid and adjuvant drug therapy), sexual dysfunction in cancer (recognition, evaluation, and management), current methodological issues in psycho-oncology research, and psychological issues in individuals at high risk of cancer.
