Abstract:
In the past decade, since the first use of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies (MAbs) in man, tremendous progress has occurred in the field of immunoscintigraphy. A large panel of highly specific MAbs against tumor-associated antigens as well as normal cell compounds has been developed. Enormous progress has been made in the field of radiolabeling, from 131I to 99mTc or even positron-emitting radionuclides such as 124I. More and more clinical applications are being studied, both inside and outside the field of oncology. This volume is intended to present a current perspective on the clinical use of antibodies. Its contents are derived from lectures held at the post-congress International Symposium held in association with the German Nuclear Medicine Congress held in Frankfurt/Main in 1990. Topics include advances in cancer imaging and therapy with radiolabeled antibodies, evaluation of the diagnostic utility of immunoscintigraphy in oncology, the quality control and clinical testing of radiolabeled antibodies, clinical utility of radiolabeled monoclonal antibodies in the management of gastrointestinal cancer, use of 123I-radiolabeled F(AB')2 fragments of anticarcinoembryonic antigen MAb for the detection of primary and metastatic gastrointestinal carcinomas, bispecific MAbs for two-phase radioimmunotherapy, antimyosin antibody imaging in myocardial infarction, antimyosin-based radioimmunodetection of myocarditis cardiomyopathy and cardiac transplant rejection, recent advances in the use of radiolabeled MAbs in the management of ovarian cancer, MAbs for cell labeling with particular reference to thrombus imaging, the role of nuclear medicine in the evaluation of the patient with AIDS, detection of inflammation/infection using radiolabeled antigranulocyte antibodies (possibilities and limitations), a new marker for the detection of adenocarcinomas by radioimmunoscintigraphy, and new developments in the diagnosis of AIDS and strategies for therapy.
