Abstract: This article gives a brief survey of the demographics of AIDS incidence in the United States, from the first reports by the Centers for Disease Control in mid-1981 through February 1991, and a discussion of the direct medical care costs of the HIV epidemic (costs). These topics are addressed: costs of persons with AIDS (PWAs; lifetime costs of PWAs, national costs of AIDS and impact of AIDS on public hospitals); costs of HIV-infected persons (HIVIPs) other than PWAs, financing medical care of HIV-infected persons (PWAs, HIVIPs other than PWAs and AZT); other HIV-related costs (eg, nonpersonal direct costs, such as blood screening to assure safety of the blood supply, special infection control measures to protect health care personnel and other patients against HIV, research and education); estimates of the indirect costs of the HIV epidemic (value of lost output due to morbidity and mortality); and prospects for the future.
