Abstract:
Interest in an immunologic basis for the etiology, progression and treatment of malignant disease has prompted considerable investigation into the status of humoral and cellular immune mechanisms in cancer patients (pts). In this study, we have quantitated T cells and their subpopulations (helper and suppressor cells) by means of indirect immunofluorescence using monoclonal antibodies directed against phenotypic markers of functional T-cell subsets in pts with advanced malignancies of the oral cavity and healthy controls. The percentage of T cells was significantly lower in the pts when compared with the controls. The absolute numbers and the percentage of helper/inducer cell (OKT4+) in the pts and controls did not show any statistically significant difference. The significant finding in the present study was the increase in the percentage as well as in the absolute numbers of the OKT8+ suppressor/cytotoxic subset in the pt group. In terms of helper/suppressor ratio, there was a significant alteration in the pt group, with the helper/suppressor ratio being 1.3119 +/- 0.294 as compared with 1.9995 +/- 0.634 in the controls. In conclusion, the present study draws attention to an increase in T cells bearing the OKT8+ phenotypic markers of the suppressor/cytotoxic T-cell subset.
