Abstract: Murine acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (MAIDS) is induced by infection of susceptible mice (ie, C57BL/6) with LP-BM5, a mixture of murine leukemia viruses (MuLV). The syndrome is characterized by severe immunodeficiency and lymphoproliferation termed MAIDS because of its similarity to human AIDS. Preliminary results have indicated that clonal T cell, rather than B-cell lymphoblastic lymphomas arose at high frequency (61%) in C57BL/6 mice with full-blown MAIDS. The progressive course of poly- to oligoclonality has been traced by the molecular analysis of immunoglobulin and TCR gene rearrangements, as well as proviral integration site analyses. Immunophenotypic profiles, malignant potential and transplantability in SCID and syngeneic recipients of these lymphomas are detailed in this study. The results demonstrated that clonal populations of predominately CD4+ T cells with malignant potential was established at high frequency in late-stage MAIDS.
