Abstract: Lincoln Hospital is a primary care institution in the South Bronx where the in-hospital HIV rate is estimated at 10%. The major risk factors for HIV infection are iv drug use in 70%, heterosexual contact in 20%, homosexual contact in 5% and blood product associated in 5%. The HIV registry consists of patients (pts) since 1988 of which 50% have expired. CDC criteria for AIDS were met in 890 pts. There have been 46 cases of malignancy in AIDS. Data are presented in a table. Only 8 pts with Kaposi's sarcoma and 4 pts with lymphoma had been on antiviral drugs for 3 mo prior to a diagnosis of malignancy. Metastatic disease was noted in 100% of lung, breast and testicular pts, 75% of cervical pts and 50% of colon pts. High-grade lymphoma was seen in 80% of lymphoma cases. Kaposi's sarcoma presented with mucus membrane or parenchymal involvement in 20% of the cases. The median survival from the diagnosis of cancer with AIDS was 12 mo. The incidence of cancer in our population for HIV infection is 1.7% and for AIDS is 5.2%.
