Abstract: Patients (pts; n=103) with lymphoid neoplasia, 77 males and 26 females aged 14-78 yr (mean age 42.6 yr), were seen in the Department of Internal Medicine, Tikur Anbessa Hospital (Black Lion) Teaching Hospital, Addis Ababa, between January 1988 and December 1991. 50 pts (48.5%) were non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), 24 (23.3%) Hodgkin's disease (HD), 21 (20.4%) chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and 8 (7.7%) multiple myeloma (MM). Ten (20%) of the NHL, 5 (20.8%) of HD, none of CLL and 1 (12.5%) of MM (overall 15/103 [14.6%]) had positive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and Western blot tests for the HIV-1 infection. Of the NHL pts with HIV-1 infection, 5 (50%) had Stage III-IV disease. Five (50%) had intermediate and four (40%) had high-grade malignancy histology. Three pts died within 2 mo of diagnosis; two are lost to follow-up, while four are alive 23-67 mo after diagnosis. Three of the four pts with HD and HIV-1 infection had Stage III-IV disease and had mixed cellularity histology. Two have died within 6 mo of diagnosis, while 3 are lost to follow-up 2.8 mo after diagnosis. The pts with multiple myeloma died 1 yr after diagnosis. Details of clinical and pathological features are discussed.
