Abstract: Dimethylhydrazine treatment of CD1 mice for more than 30 wk induced colorectal-anal cancer as well as skin and visceral angiosarcomas in high proportions. These mice were tested as models for AIDS-associated Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) with respect to their immune status and for the histological similarity of skin lesions with KS. The mice exhibited a 60% decrease in antibody response to sheep RBC, a 50% decrease in the mitogenic response of spleen cells to LPS, as well as splenomegaly. The number of T-cell subsets in spleen and peripheral blood remained unchanged. There was a striking similarity between the histological appearance of skin tumors and KS. Tumor-bearing mice were subjected to antiangiogenic therapy consisting of a cortisone and maltose tetrapalmitate combination which prevented tumor vol increase. (12 Refs)
