Abstract:
The Scripps Memorial Hospitals Tenth Annual Cancer Symposium was held October 22-24, 1990, in La Jolla, CA. The major sessions focused on new topics in the 90s, challenges in patient management, survivorship issues, surgical oncology, colorectal malignancies, and pain management. Abstracts and papers on the following subjects are included: lasers in oncology; photodynamic therapy of malignant tumors; innovative brachytherapy techniques; outpatient care; nursing opportunities in clinical trials; treatment of nausea and vomiting and of side effects in biotherapy; management of infection; intervention in HIV symptomatology; autologous transplants for solid tumors; ethical considerations in treating the elderly; employment and insurance discrimination of cancer survivors; psycho-social concerns in long-term survivorship; reconstructing cancer's defects; a comprehensive model for laryngectomy teaching; self-care for nurses; troubleshooting vascular access devices; cancer-related sexual dysfunction; early detection, prevention and associated risks; diagnosis, staging and treatment; management of treatment side effects in colorectal malignancies; enterostomal therapy; assessment of cancer pain; and pharmacology and family factors in pain management.
