Abstract: Quality of life (QL) in patients (pts) with HIV infection and its sequelae are of increased concern as pts live for longer periods of time. The Cancer Rehabilitation Evaluation System (CARES) is a detailed cancer-specific QL assessment tool with excellent psychometric properties that we adapted for HIV pts: the HOPES (HIV Overview of Problem Situations-Evaluation System). In preliminary analysis of a sample of 106 HIV-infected pts (24% HIV+ asymptomatic, 15% ARC, 40% AIDS, 21% AIDS with cancer), its psychometric properties are excellent. Internal consistency coefficients of its 35 subscales range from 0.68-0.96 with a mean of 0.85 and is comparable to the CARES. The pattern of correlations, as shown in a table, of the HOPES summary scores with other measures provide evidence of the HOPES' validity. In this sample, 70% or more indicated problems with ambulation, recreation, work, pain, body image stigma, psychological distress, communication with friends/family, worry, sexual activity, and new relationships. The data support the HOPES as a QL tool for HIV-infected pts.
