Abstract: A total of 43 pts (25 KS + 18 NHL), enrolled in 2 chemotherapy protocols, completed 2 QL scales: Functional Living Index Cancer (FLIC) and Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) at time of on-study. Clinical variables recorded for each pt included age, sex, performance status (PS), tumor stage, B-symptoms (BS), prior opportunistic infections (POI), CD4 count, survival (OS), FLIC and BSI scores (BSI scales include General Severity Index [GSI], Positive Symptom Distress Index [PSDI], and Positive Symptom Total [PST]). Data were analyzed by discriminant and correlational analyses, proportional hazard models, and product-limit survival analysis. Stepwise discriminant analysis indicated that NHL and KS groups are uniquely discriminated (p less than 0.05) by GSI, BS, OS, POI, and FLIC. Bivariate group differences were also found for PSDI and PST. Product-limit analysis revealed that NHL and KS survival did not differ (p greater than 0.50). Proportional hazard models fitted separately to NHL and KS groups revealed that PSDI, GSI, PST, FLIC, PS, and POI were significantly predictive of survival times (p less than 0.05) for NHL. For the KS group, GSI (p less than 0.01) alone predicted survival. For pooled NHL+KS pts, only PS predicted survival times (p less than 0.01).
