Abstract:
OBJECTIVE: To obtain evidence for HIV2 infection in Mexico. METHODS: In 1990, in a quality control evaluation, 229 (181 positive for HIV1 and 48 negative) serum samples from 4,200 sera obtained between 1985 to 1989 searching for HIV1 and HIV2 antibodies in several groups (male homosexuals and bisexuals, blood donors, prostitutes and heterosexual of both sexes), were screened with Vironostika HTLV III EIA and Vironostika HIV MIXT (HIV1 and HIV2) EIA, (Organon Teknika). Positive samples were additionally screened with LiaTek (HIV1 and HIV2) and confirmed by new LAV-Blot II (Diagnostics Pasteur) and HIV2 Western Blot (Cambridge Biotech). RESULTS: The 181 positive samples were concordantly positives in HTLV III and HIV MIXT EIA's. Only two of these samples (code #30 and #79) were positive for both HIV1 and HIV2 in LiaTek, and belonged to asymptomatic active male homosexuals that have had frequent sexual contacts with European, North American and Canadian partners. The LiaTek results for #30 (gp41:2+; p17:2+; gp36:1+) and #79 (gp41:2+; p31:1+; p24:1+; gp36:1+), were confirmed by Western Blot showing the following bands: #30: gp105: +/- (status undetermined), and #79: gp140: +/-; gp105: +; gp36: +/-; p26: +/- (status undetermined). In 1992 a Western Blot from subject #30, revealed: gp140, gp34 trimer, gp34 trans-membrane, p31 and p26 bands (positive, WHO criteria). Subject #79 was not traceable. CONCLUSION: At least one HIV1/HIV2 case was detected in our study. PCR and further epidemiological investigations are needed.
