Abstract: The Scripps Memorial Hospitals Fourteenth Annual Cancer Symposium was held October 22-24, 1990, in La Jolla, CA. The five major sessions focused on hematology, evolution of multimodality therapy in gastrointestinal cancer, gynecological cancer, issues for the 1990s, breast cancer and AIDS. The following subjects were addressed: patients (pts) who need more than CHOP (cyclophosphamide, Adriamycin, vincristine, prednisone); recent advances in blood transfusion; new directions in chronic lymphocytic leukemia; management of the pt with Stage IIIA Hodgkin's disease; anal canal cancer; adjuvant therapy for colorectal cancer; role of surgery in pancreatic, esophageal and liver cancer; bleeding disorders of pregnancy; refractory ovarian cancer; surgical-pathologic indications for adjuvant therapy in endometrial carcinoma; biology of human papillomavirus (HPV); manifestations and treatment of HPV infection; combined modality therapy of advanced cervical cancer; cutaneous melanoma; indications for combined modality therapy in CNS neoplasm; hormonal therapy in prostate cancer; approach to the pt with cancer of unknown primary; state of the art in small cell lung cancer therapy; dose intensity in adjuvant chemotherapy of breast cancer; decision-making for node-negative breast cancer pts; local recurrence in breast cancer; approach to the pt with advanced breast cancer; new therapies for HIV infection; and AIDS-related lymphoma.
