Abstract: Positive mycobacterial cultures (PMC) from 1983-89 were reviewed and compared. Total number of PMC, % of PMC due to M.tuberculosis (MTB), M.avium complex (MAC) and other mycobacteria (OM), mean age of patients (pts) and % of men with PMC were: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. Yearly increases occurred in total PMC, % of men with PMC and % of PMC due to MAC. Yearly declines occurred in % of PMC due to MTB and in the mean age of pts. Insignificant yearly changes occurred in number of positive MTB cultures and % of resistant MTB. Among pts with known HIV status 48/49 with MAC, 21/56 with MTB and 21/27 with OM were positive. Mycobacteria are an increasing cause of morbidity in this group and younger persons are being infected. Clinicians should be aware of these trends in order to diagnose and treat early thus controlling further spread of mycobacteria.
