Abstract: Mycobacteremia is rarely detected despite hematogenous spread of disease during dissemination, because culturing for MTB has not become a routine Laboratory test. In this work we studied 25 AIDS patients admitted to the Hospital with unknown fever. An HIV negative patient was also included in the study. Blood samples were collected employing the lysis-centrifugation (L-C) isolator, and inoculated into middlebrook M7H9 and M7H10. All blood samples were immediatelly subjected to direct acid fast straining. One of the latter samples was shown to be positive. All samples were positive for MTB after an average of 11 days post inoculation. This is the first and largest report in Spain of mycobacteremia in AIDS patients. We also believe that this work is the most extensive work carried out with patients affected by mycobacterias. This study offers a significant advantage for quickly detecting MTB in blood samples in the short period of 11 day. Finally we showed that the L-C system is useful for directly detecting MTB in blood samples.
