Abstract: Laboratories enrolled in the CDC model performance evaluation program for HIV-1 antibody testing reported EIA results after testing HIV-1 performance evaluation samples sent them in February and May 1990. The panels contained 10 individual samples that were either HIV-1 antibody-negative, antibody-positive, or indeterminate; some samples were blind duplicates within the panel. Laboratories reported 1.3% false-reactive interpretations (analytic specificity: 98.7%) for the antibody-negative samples, compared with 0.3% false-nonreactive interpretatious (analytic sensitivity: 99.7%) for the positive group 1 samples (reactive using the WB interpretive criteria endorsed by the Association of State and Territorial Public Health Laboratory Directors/Centers for Disease Control [ASTPHLD/CDC] and by the Food and Drug Aministration/Du Pont [FDA/Du Pont]), 0.5% false-nonreactive interpretations (analytic sensitivity: 99.5%) for the positive group 2 samples (reactive by ASTPHLD/CDC, indeterminate by FDA/Du pont criteria), and 1.9% false-nonreactive interpretations (analytic sensitivity: 98.1%) for the indeterminate samples (indeterminate by ASTPHLD/CDC and FDA/Du Pont criteria).
