Abstract:
The current understanding of the lymph as a fluid containing proteins and migrating cells (eg, macrophages and lymphocytes) has led to treatment of lymphedema based on mechanical external drainage procedures, physiological lympho-venous shunts, and the administration of antibiotics. As the understanding of the lymph increases in the future, treatment will become more sophisticated. This volume contains presentations representing the proceedings of the XIIth International Conference of Lymphology, held in Kyoto and Tokyo, Japan, from August 28 to September 2, 1989. Topics include fine structure and immunochemistry of the lymphatic system; effects of high-protein and their reduction by benzo-pyrones; the lung, cancer metastasis, skin and the lymphatic system; suprailiac lymphography; the role of the lymphatic system and lymphoid cells in immune reactions; treatment of lymphedema; development, structure, and function of lymphatic origin; virus dissemination via the lymphomyeloid complex; lymphoid cell migration and distribution (basic mechanisms and implications in experimental and human immunodeficiency syndromes); diagnostic imaging of the lymphatic system; imaging neck nodes in head and neck cancer; magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) evaluation of lymph-node response to therapy in malignant lymphoma; radiation therapy of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) and NHL in the head and neck; treatment of diffuse large-cell lymphomas; chemotherapy of Hodgkin's disease; methods to assess and quantify lymphatic flow; lymphatic organopathy of various organs; anatomy of the lymphatics; lymph circulation; electron microscopic demonstration of the invasion of tumor cells into the diaphragm; lymphography of para-aortic nodes in gastric cancer; computed tomography in detection of lymph-node metastases in gynecologic cancer; deposition of liposomes in lymph nodes; detailed histological study of lymph-node metastases; collagenolytic activity against type IV collagen in human gastric cancer; MRI assessment of bone marrow involvement in Hodgkin's disease and NHL; combination radio-chemotherapy in Stage I and II diffuse NHL; carbon particle suspension as lymphatic stainer and carrier of drugs to the lymphatics; remission of true lymphoblastic lymphoma after chicken pox infection and treatment with acyclovir; lymphedema and lymphatic disease; immunology; AIDS; tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes; and genomic rearrangement of the c-myc proto-oncogene in primary human NHL.
